7 Health Issues Caused by Bad Oral Health

Oral health is far more than just the health of the mouth, teeth, and gums. Since the oral cavity is the main access to the human body, poor oral health can have a negative impact on the entire body. Bacteria in the mouth can easily enter the bloodstream and cause infection and inflammation  Sore teeth, bleeding gums, and bad breath all indicate poor oral health.

The following are some common and serious health problems caused by poor oral health:

Cardiovascular Disease

Poor oral health can have a very serious impact on your heart. If the gums are inflamed by the bacteria that cause periodontal disease, then the bacteria will actually enter the bloodstream, causing the arteries to accumulate and harden. It causes blood flow problems and may lead to heart blockage, which will increase the chances of a heart attack.

Dementia

Poor oral health can affect your brain too. The substances released from the gums caused by the infection can actually kill brain cells and cause memory loss.

Respiratory Infections

Poor oral health can cause damage to the respiratory system. Bacteria from infected teeth and swollen gums in the mouth can be inhaled into the lungs or can enter the lungs through the bloodstream. Once there, the bacteria can cause respiratory infections, pneumonia, and even acute bronchitis.

Diabetes

People with diabetes are more susceptible to infections, such as gum infections that cause periodontal disease. For diabetics, it is particularly important to take good care of their oral health to prevent disease complications. Since gum disease can cause blood sugar levels to be higher than normal, people with poor oral health have an increased risk of diabetes.

Pregnancy Complications

It is very important for pregnant women to maintain good oral hygiene. Hormonal changes in the body during pregnancy can make women more prone to oral infections. Any infection in the mother’s body will increase her risk of pregnancy complications. Mother’s oral health problems, such as periodontitis and gingivitis, are known to cause premature delivery and low birth weight. Gum disease puts both mothers and babies at risk of serious health problems.

Infertility

There is a link between poor oral health and female infertility. Gum disease can cause various general health problems, making it more difficult for women to conceive and maintain a healthy pregnancy. Compared with women with good oral health, women with poor oral health actually take longer to become pregnant.

Erectile Dysfunction

Poor oral hygiene increases men’s risk of erectile dysfunction. Bacteria from diseased gums enter the bloodstream and cause inflammation of the blood vessels. This inflammation prevents blood flow to the genitals, making erections more difficult or even impossible.

The best way to prevent serious health problems caused by poor oral health is to maintain good oral hygiene and arrange regular visits to the dentist. So it is very necessary to practice good oral hygiene which includes brushing your teeth and gums for two minutes at least twice a day. You should floss your teeth every day and always avoid smoking or chewing tobacco products.
